NLP Submodalities
How the Brain Encodes Experiences Using Submodalities
Our brains are like super-smart computers that constantly take in information from the world around us. This information comes through our senses—sight, sound, touch, taste, and smell.
But it’s not just about what we see, hear, or feel; it’s about the tiny details within these experiences, known as submodalities. These submodalities help the brain encode and organize all the sensory input, creating a rich internal representation of the world.
Think of it like this, when you take a photo with a digital camera, the camera captures colors, brightness, and sharpness. Your brain does something similar when it processes experiences. It doesn’t just record what happens, it breaks down each experience into detailed submodalities.
For instance, when you remember a day at the beach, your brain stores the brightness of the sun, the sound of the waves, the warmth of the sand, the scent of the ocean, and the taste of salt in the air. These submodalities make the memory vivid and complete.
Scientists found that human beings ‘code’ internal experiences using aspects of their different senses. Therefore, changing these senses (or submodalities) is a very effective and powerful way of changing the meaning of an experience - including negative memories and trauma.
Submodalities are like the settings on a TV or a computer that control how images and sounds are displayed. By adjusting these settings, we can change how we experience and feel about what we see and hear. Similarly, in our brains, submodalities can be adjusted to change our emotional and physical responses to different experiences. When we change a submodality, we can shift our perception and, consequently, our reaction.
One of NLP's originators - Richard Bandler taught how submodality shifts could be used to change habits (swish pattern ), change beliefs, create motivation or understanding, and to break locked-in patterns like compulsions, or to lock in new changes. These representational systems are how we store memories and these were nick named VAK: Visual, Auditory and Kinesthetic. (There are also olfactory and gustatory, but these are not used as much).
The Swish Pattern
The most famous submodality method is called the 'Swish Pattern' and there are many youtube videos on the subject. Ghita uses a combination of submodalties script and the swish pattern. In Ghita's opinion this cements the effect in a powerful way.

Lulu's Case Study:
Working with Lulu (23 year old student from Brisbane) Ghita facilitated a Parts Integration (NLP) method for money (as part of her 3 pack package) as Lulu always seemed to struggle with money as a student and she had terrible language surrounding money. Additionally, there was a parallel issue with her dad to be worked on. Gratefully, Lulu left a Google Review and gave permission to share this... And she wants to work more on herself...
